Proofreading is focused on grammar, spelling, punctuation, word choice, and the like. Proofreading should be the last thing that happens before your writing is published. Any editing or extensive content refinement should be done before proofreading.

Who needs a proofreader? The short answer—everyone does! It doesn’t matter if you’re an author, blogger, student, journalist, marketer, graphic designer, entrepreneur, or a web content creator. You are your writing, and the image you reflect makes an impression. Get Grammerd to ensure that impression is a good one!
If you’re putting writing of any kind into the hands of an audience, a second set of eyes is your best friend. You know what you’ve written, but it’s easier than you think to overlook minor details like misspellings, missing words, or missing punctuation. Word choice is also something that your typical spellchecker won’t catch—like using the word “there” when you mean “they’re,” or using “your” when “you’re” should be used instead.
While everyone needs proofreading, everyone may not need editing. Perhaps you’ve already had editing done by someone else. That’s ok! But if you’re at all curious if editing is needed, that’s where a good sample helps determine that. Grammerd is here to help you navigate the waters of the written word. If you’re not sure if you need editing, let’s talk!
Proofreading is the finishing touch to the writing process—the icing on the cake. The intent is to polish and buff out any remaining minor flaws: things like spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Editing is more involved than proofreading. Where proofreading is the final pass before you are ready to put something out into the world, editing takes more grit to make your finished written product great. The combination of proofreading and editing is a two-step process. Editing first, followed by proofreading. Though they can be done simultaneously, it is important to separate the two in order to achieve the best possible outcome for both. If you’re not sure which one you need, let’s have a conversation. Grammerd is happy to help you figure that out!
Yes! Providing a sample helps get the ball rolling for any proofreading or editing project. It’s also the starting point in determining what is needed to complete a job. This is not intended to be criticism, but it is the best way to set reasonable expectations.
Samples must be double-spaced, in 12pt Times New Roman font (or something similar), with 1-inch margins. Generally, 2-3 pages is sufficient. If your content is shorter than 2-3 pages in length, a more agreeable sample size can be determined before submission.
The Grammerd process starts with a sample. Once expectations are set, the process then involves proofing or editing a document, finding any errors that may be present, marking those suggestions or errors for your review, and finally returning that document to you. The proofreading and editing processes look similar but with different goals in mind. Editing often takes longer and may involve several passes or reviews to get to a final copy.

You might be thinking this is an inappropriate question, but the answer is yes. This is important when speaking English as a second language may not be sufficient to know the intricacies in syntax, punctuation, and the grammatical conundrums that exist within the English language. There are also differences between American English and British English that are critical to distinguish depending on your audience, often in spelling. Being a native, American English-speaker helps alleviate that.
